Cigarette test: what is it?
The BS 5852 standard offers test methods for the use of composite upholstery materials.

The aim of the test, according to British standards, is to measure the flammability of material for upholstered furniture according to BS 5852 Ignition Source 1.
Using these test methods, the ability of these materials to burn when exposed to a lit cigarette or a flaming object is assessed.

During the test, a gradual burning situation is observed, starting from the fabric surface or from inside the upholstery padding.
If the upholstery burns or catches fire within an hour of the cigarette being extinguished, the product does not meet the standard.
